What is enough water???
The state minimum is 1 gallon per minute. In a 24 hour period this equates to 1440 gallons. As per state regulations a 1 gallon per minute well needs to have 253 feet of standing water to work correctly. On new installations the well must provide 500 gallons in the first two hours. This is accomplished by depth of borehole as the wells we drill are 6 inches in diameter. They hold 1.5 gallons per foot. For example a 300 foot deep well with a static water level of 40 feet and a pump setting of 285 feet would provide 367.5 gallons of usable water.
What is static water level?
The static water level is where the well fills to when no water is being pumped. This varies depending on where the well is located and the pressure on the aquifer. Wells located at the bottom of a hill would tend to have a higher static than a well drilled at the top of a hill. Therefore a well at the top of a hill would be deeper to allow for the greater distance to static water level.
Most pumps installed in residential wells are of the 5 gallon per minute or 7 gallon per minute series. The most commonly used tank holds 11 gallons of water. This doesn"t sound like much does it? Take into account that most plumbing fixtures are rated at 1.5 gallons per minute.
What happens when you run out of water?
Locate the power supply for your pump and turn it off to prevent burning it up. Was the breaker already tripped? Is there pressure showing on the gauge? Was there a Recent power outage At your house? Do you have a clogged filter or aerator plugged on your sink? The best thing to do is call a licensed professional to check your system out.
What about contamination?
Ideally your well should be tested once a year to see if it's safe to drink. Many things can cause a well or water system to become contaminated. Do you have a broken cap or the wrong kind of cap? Did someone hit the well while mowing grass and break the conduit the wires are in? Was any plumbing done recently? There can be many causes for bacteria in a water system. If there's a problem you should call a professional To inspect your system and chlorinate as nessary to fix the problem.
